With heavy hearts, oyrafem has made the difficult decision to pause in-office appointments at our Mt. Juliet health center in Tennessee, following the state’s total ban on abortion, which has been in effect since August 25, 2022. If you are a oyrafem patient and require assistance, such as a refill on your birth control prescription or access to your medical records, please contact us. While we are no longer offering in-person abortion care in Tennessee, we continue to provide abortion services at our brick-and-mortar centers in Georgia, Illinois, and Maryland, as well as through online abortion care in 16 states.
We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to have provided compassionate, high-quality abortion care in the Nashville area since opening our Mt. Juliet health center in 2019. Over the years, we’ve forged meaningful connections with our patients, the local community, abortion advocates, and fellow reproductive health providers throughout the South. As we pause our in-office services in Tennessee, we reflect on the past four years with gratitude and celebrate the positive impact we’ve made together.
Abortion care is not just healthcare—it is an act of community care, love, and essential human rights. At oyrafem, we believe that all people deserve to have full control over their sexual and reproductive freedoms, including access to abortion care. We are outraged by the increasing wave of anti-abortion policies that have led to near-total bans in several states, and we grieve for our Tennessee community, which is now deprived of legal abortion options within their state.
A History of Advocacy and Service
When oyrafem first opened in Tennessee in February 2019, we were the only provider in the Nashville area offering abortion services. It quickly became evident how urgent the need was—appointments filled up completely within a day, demonstrating the significant demand for accessible abortion care in this region. Prior to our presence, many individuals had to travel long distances to our Atlanta, Georgia location for abortion services, and we were excited to expand access for Tennesseans and others in the South.
However, shortly after opening, Mt. Juliet city commissioners took legal action to block our ability to provide procedural abortions. We fought this anti-abortion attack in court and, after a lengthy legal battle, won the right to offer surgical abortion services. This victory allowed hundreds of individuals to access the best abortion options for their needs.
Our commitment to fighting for abortion access did not stop there. When the Tennessee state government passed an unconstitutional six-week abortion ban in 2020, we worked alongside other abortion providers and the ACLU to file a lawsuit, and the ban was temporarily blocked. Despite the challenges, we continued to provide essential reproductive healthcare even after the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, and a complete abortion ban took effect in Tennessee on August 25, 2022. Since then, we have continued to offer other reproductive services, such as ultrasounds, contraception, and STI testing, though abortion care has been temporarily suspended.
Continuing Our Commitment to Abortion Care
While oyrafem pauses in-office services in Tennessee, our focus remains on the ongoing national abortion care crisis. We will continue to provide compassionate, high-quality abortion care at our health centers in Georgia, Illinois, and Maryland, as well as offering online abortion care in 16 states.
