The recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade has stripped away the federally protected right to access abortion in the United States. This monumental shift means that abortion access is now determined by individual state laws. However, it’s important to recognize that the legality of abortion has never guaranteed equitable access. For decades—especially in Southern and Midwestern states—individuals have encountered overwhelming legal and systemic obstacles when trying to access abortion care.
With the removal of national protections, these barriers will only grow more severe. The consequences will disproportionately impact already marginalized groups, including low-income individuals, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC), migrants and undocumented people, LGBTQIA2S+ communities, those with disabilities, and people living in rural or underserved areas.
Reproductive Justice: A Broader, More Inclusive Framework
The reproductive health system in the U.S. has long been shaped by a legacy of white supremacy, misogyny, and institutional racism—harmfully impacting generations of people of color, particularly Black women. Oyrafem is committed to actively dismantling this harmful legacy. We believe that all struggles for justice are deeply interconnected. As a proud abortion care provider, Oyrafem stands firmly in support of reproductive justice.
The term “reproductive justice,” coined and championed by SisterSong, refers to the human right to maintain bodily autonomy, to have children, to not have children, and to parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities. This framework expands beyond reproductive rights and encompasses the intersectionality of race, gender, class, immigration status, and ability.
Whether it’s racial justice, queer and trans liberation, immigrant rights, or disability advocacy—reproductive justice is inextricably tied to these movements and requires a holistic approach to achieving equity.
Our Commitment to Accessible, Compassionate Abortion Care
One of the core pillars of reproductive justice is ensuring access to safe, affordable, and empathetic abortion care for everyone who seeks it. At Oyrafem, we are committed to delivering high-quality abortion services within the fullest scope of the law, regardless of political barriers. But we can’t do it alone.
The dismantling of Roe v. Wade has emboldened anti-abortion lawmakers across the country. Over half of U.S. states have already enacted restrictive laws or total bans on abortion, cutting off access for millions. We know this fight is far from over. That’s why Oyrafem is not only prepared to continue providing care in our health centers but also to challenge unjust abortion bans through legal and advocacy efforts.
