January marks 51 years since Roe v. Wade, a pivotal decision that ensured federal protections for abortion in the U.S., serving as a symbol of reproductive rights for nearly five decades. Yet, in June 2022, the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned this landmark case, dismantling the federal protections for abortion. The removal of these protections has triggered a wave of restrictive state laws that have severely limited or outright banned access to abortion services. Anti-abortion extremists have succeeded in passing near-total abortion bans in 14 states, affecting over 20 million individuals. The impact of the Dobbs decision is far-reaching and will continue to affect generations to come.
The idea that “Roe was the floor, not the ceiling” encourages us to imagine a future where reproductive freedom and comprehensive abortion access become a reality for all. Even before the overturning of Roe, there were many barriers to abortion care, including restrictive state laws, geographic limitations, criminalization of those seeking abortion, financial strain, and societal stigma. These obstacles have disproportionately harmed Black, Indigenous, People of Color, disabled individuals, low-income individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those without legal status.
Those in need of abortion care deserve more than what Roe ever offered, and our communities deserve more than what has been taken away. Oyrafem is committed to exceeding expectations and offering high-quality, compassionate, and accessible abortion and reproductive health services for all. In response to the reversal of Roe v.
