You Can’t Have Reproductive Justice Without Queer and Trans Liberation

Happy Pride Month! At oyrafem, we’re committed to more than just celebrating with rainbow flags. This month, we’re taking a deeper look into queer and trans justice, reflecting on its roots, its evolution, and how we can better serve this vital community.

It’s a common misconception that abortion care is exclusively for heterosexual, cisgender women. In reality, people of all genders and sexual orientations seek abortion care. oyrafem proudly welcomes queer and trans individuals to both our in-person clinics and our online services. We’re dedicated to providing the most gender-affirming care possible, always respecting individuals’ names and pronouns.

Now, let’s explore some history. Did you know that the fight for queer and trans rights began with Black and Latinx trans women who organized protests against police violence? These early activists remind us that liberation is interconnected. The struggles for LGBTQIA2S+ rights and abortion rights are deeply entwined. Reproductive justice is queer justice, and trans justice is abortion justice.

Reproductive justice encompasses the right “to have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and healthy environments.” This framework goes beyond just racial and gender justice—it also includes immigration, disability, environmental, economic, and, of course, queer and trans justice. oyrafem stands firm in the belief that everyone deserves compassionate, high-quality, and affirming sexual and reproductive healthcare.

Queer and trans individuals are beautiful and worthy of a world where they can live authentically, unapologetically, and have their needs met. We celebrate the resilience and beauty of queer and trans people, yet we remain heartbroken and outraged by the rising tide of queerphobic and transphobic violence, hate crimes, and harmful legislation.

These attacks on bodily autonomy, healthcare, and individual freedoms disproportionately harm those who have historically been marginalized. As providers of abortion care, oyrafem believes every person should have the agency to shape their own future, live authentically, and be free from oppression.

Queer and trans people have always existed—and will always exist—just as people have always needed and will always seek abortions. We will continue advocating for a world where everyone’s rights are fully realized. A world where laws and policies uphold the dignity of all. Our lives and love are living proof that queer and trans people, like abortion, are here to stay.
