Abortion is one of the most common and widely supported healthcare services in the United States. According to a Gallup poll, 85% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal in certain or all circumstances. Earlier this year, the oyrafem team created a list of things that abortion has a higher approval rating than. From the U.S. government to Dolly Parton to pineapple on pizza, abortion is more popular than many things—so much so that we decided to make a follow-up blog to showcase just how common, safe, and supported abortion care is, especially in this fall season!

But we’re not alone in this passion—abortion rights are far more popular than you might think! Not only will 1 in 4 people who can get pregnant have an abortion in their lifetime, but a majority of people across the nation believe that abortion care should be both legal and accessible.

How Popular is Abortion?

A Gallup poll reveals that 85% of Americans believe abortion should be legal under certain or all circumstances. Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year, we witnessed widespread protests in support of safe, legal, and accessible abortion care, as well as a significant outcry in voting booths advocating for abortion rights.

With such overwhelming support for abortion rights, we wanted to show just how popular abortion really is by comparing it to some of your favorite fall things.

#1: Pumpkin Spice Lattes – 54%

It’s the time of year for the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL), a drink adored by millions. But, guess what? Abortion is more popular than PSLs by 31%! While pumpkin spice lovers may debate the flavor, abortion enjoys a significantly higher approval rating.

#2: The Office – 81%

One of the most-watched TV series, The Office has built a huge fan base over the years. Still, abortion holds a slightly higher approval rating than the show’s Rotten Tomatoes score. Can you imagine the office gang supporting someone through an abortion? We think Pam would be there for you, Michael would take you to the clinic, and even Angela might offer faith-based resources!

#3: McDonald’s – 58%

Known for its quick, convenient food options, McDonald’s has made a name for itself worldwide. But abortion holds a higher approval rating by 27%. #4: Every Presidential Candidate for 2024

Presidential candidates can barely manage to top 46% approval ratings in polls, yet abortion holds a commanding 85% approval. Despite the political divide, the majority of Americans support reproductive rights and abortion care, which cannot be said for our future political leaders.

#5: Apple Pie – 79%

You know the saying, “as American as apple pie”? Well, it turns out abortion is more popular than apple pie by about 6%. This fall, whether you prefer apple, pumpkin, or pecan pie, oyrafem supports your right to choose—whether it’s your pie or your pregnancy.

#6: Football – 66%

As one of the most popular American pastimes, football still doesn’t top abortion’s approval rating. Football may have been around for a long time, but abortion has been a part of healthcare for far longer—and it’s more widely supported!

#7: Netflix – 73%

Netflix is one of the leading streaming platforms, offering thousands of shows and movies, but it still doesn’t come close to abortion in terms of popularity. From Dirty Dancing to Jane the Virgin, pop culture representations of abortion in TV shows and movies reflect how real people make decisions about their reproductive health.

#8: Beyoncé and Taylor Swift – 52% and 56%

Despite their massive influence, both Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have a lower approval rating than abortion. Beyoncé has been outspoken about her experiences with reproductive health, while Taylor Swift has actively supported abortion rights. We’re thankful for these incredible women who advocate for reproductive rights, and their songs will forever feature in our pro-abortion playlists.
