Oyrafem’s 2022 Annual Report

On June 24th, the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade, ruling that the right to an abortion is no longer protected by the U.S. Constitution. While we continue to assess the implications for each of the communities we serve, Oyrafem remains committed to providing medically supported, affordable abortion care in all states where it is legally permitted. Through both compassionate in-person services and the discreet, affordable provision of abortion medication via telehealth, Oyrafem will adapt its offerings to improve access to abortion care for our clients, wherever and whenever possible. To learn more about our progress and future plans, read further here.

Growth and Expansion in 2021
The year 2021 marked significant growth for Oyrafem, with a 34% increase in the number of clients served compared to the previous year. The rising demand for quicker, more accessible, and more affordable visits has helped propel our Abortion at Home program, which served 47% more clients than our busiest brick-and-mortar health center in 2021. Through telehealth, Oyrafem provided at-home abortion services in 10 states, including the District of Columbia, while also serving clients from nearly 20 states. By the end of 2022, Oyrafem plans to expand virtual care into at least five new states, specifically targeting areas where abortion services are no longer available.

Advocacy, Research, and Reproductive Health
For years, Oyrafem has worked alongside global research and advocacy organizations to collect critical data that improves reproductive health outcomes and services. This work has played a key role in demonstrating the safety and efficacy of the abortion pill, contributing to the body of evidence supporting the ability of individuals to safely manage their abortions at home. Notably, our collaboration in a clinical study with the University of California, San Francisco helped reverse the FDA’s restrictions on mailing mifepristone in December 2021.

Increased Demand for Abortion Pills
The pandemic significantly increased the demand for abortion pills, prompting Oyrafem to conduct message testing to find the most effective way of communicating about at-home abortion services. Through comprehensive qualitative and quantitative testing, the term “at-home abortion pills” was identified as the most impactful message. In addition, Oyrafem developed an integrated translation feature on our website and redesigned all client-facing printed materials to be available in multiple languages, making it easier for more individuals to find the services they need.

Technological Advancements and Client Experience
Over the last year, Oyrafem introduced new technological solutions to enhance nearly every aspect of the client experience—from appointment scheduling to completing pre-visit documentation, to post-visit follow-ups. Our newly launched online scheduling platform has simplified appointment bookings and improved the overall experience, both in-center and online. These changes reflect Oyrafem’s ongoing commitment to providing seamless access to healthcare as requested by our clients.

The Path Forward
The loss of Roe v. Wade has had a profound and harmful impact, but Oyrafem remains steadfast in its mission to increase access to abortion care, especially in these challenging times. The success of Oyrafem would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our team, donors, and volunteers. We sincerely thank you for your continued support.
