How Prompt Can You Take a Pregnancy Test?

Almost everyone who can become pregnant has experienced a pregnancy scare at some point. Whether you’re feeling a bit anxious or having a full-blown panic attack, knowing a few key facts can be incredibly helpful. Every situation is different, but oyrafem is here to support you and guide you through this experience.

When Can You Take a Pregnancy Test?

You can take a home pregnancy test as early as 10–14 days after unprotected sex. However, for the most accurate results, it’s recommended to wait until 21 days or more after unprotected sex. Many home pregnancy tests are designed to detect pregnancy hormones as early as 10 days after conception, but to ensure a reliable result and avoid false readings, taking the test at 21 days or later provides definitive results.

Knowing as early as possible whether you are pregnant gives you more options for care, no matter what decision you choose. Medication abortion is generally available up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, though some states have laws restricting abortion before that time. That’s why it’s important to take a pregnancy test as soon as possible—10–14 days after unprotected sex—so that you have more time to explore your options and seek care.

What Time of Day Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

For the most accurate results, it’s best to take a pregnancy test using your first urine of the morning. This is when your urine is most concentrated, making it easier for the test to detect the presence of hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), a hormone produced early in pregnancy.

Before you take the test, don’t forget to check the expiration date. Home pregnancy tests may not work as effectively if they are expired, or if you don’t follow the instructions properly. Be sure to read the test results only after the recommended waiting time stated in the instructions. Never read the test result after a few hours, as tests may show a false positive if left too long.
