When news broke of the leaked draft opinion suggesting the Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade, our first thoughts were with our clients. We thought of those scheduled for appointments today, tomorrow, and in the weeks ahead—people who may now be uncertain, anxious, and asking: Is abortion still legal?
Let us be absolutely clear:
Abortion is still legal in all 50 U.S. states.
At Oyrafem, we are committed to providing accurate information, high-quality care, and unwavering support—especially in times of political turmoil and public confusion.
The Most Marginalized Will Feel the Hardest Impact
Abortion bans do not affect all people equally. History and data show that restrictions on reproductive care disproportionately harm:
- Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)
- People with low incomes
- Individuals with disabilities
- LGBTQIA+ communities
- Immigrants and undocumented people
- Rural populations and others facing systemic oppression
These communities already encounter compounded barriers when accessing healthcare. The erosion of abortion protections will only deepen that inequity.
At Oyrafem, we believe medical care should prioritize both physical comfort and emotional well-being, while also respecting our clients’ individual circumstances—including their values, family needs, and economic realities. This means offering timely, compassionate care, ideally close to home and within the communities where people live.
What the Supreme Court Leak Really Means
The leaked draft opinion strongly suggests that the Supreme Court is preparing to dismantle the federal protections of Roe v. Wade, leaving regulation of abortion access entirely to individual states.
We’ve already seen the consequences of similar restrictions across the South and Midwest—policies that make abortion harder to obtain but do nothing to reduce the need for it. Instead, these laws force people to travel long distances for essential care, further burdening those already at risk.
Illinois: A Lifeline for Abortion Access
Thankfully, Illinois continues to protect reproductive freedom—and we’re proud to serve clients both in-state and from across the country. Our Skokie health center provides in-clinic abortion care, and our telehealth services make at-home abortion pills accessible to eligible clients under the supervision of trusted providers.
States like Illinois demonstrate what it means to protect healthcare access. But we need more states to follow suit, ensuring everyone can receive safe, legal abortion care without leaving their home communities.
Making Abortion Care More Accessible Through Telehealth
Telehealth abortion care is a powerful option—especially for those who cannot access care locally due to legal, financial, or logistical barriers. Instead of traveling long distances or waiting days for a clinic visit, patients can:
- Meet with a provider through a secure virtual consultation
- Receive their medications via mail or pick them up in a nearby state
- Avoid the costs and complications of travel, missed work, or child care
This model provides a more private, affordable, and empowering experience for many.
Currently, Oyrafem offers medically supervised at-home abortion pills in 15 states, and we’re working to expand access even further. With your help, we can bring this innovative, high-quality care to more people in more places.
