What Is an In-Office Procedure?
An in-office procedure is a safe, convenient, and affordable method for ending an early pregnancy. Also known as “MVA,” “aspiration abortion,” or “surgical abortion,” this procedure is performed in our office using a gentle, hand-held suction device. It’s a simple and effective way to complete an early abortion with minimal discomfort.

Is an Abortion Painful?
A common question we hear is, “Does an abortion hurt?” The truth is, the experience varies for everyone—just like how periods feel different for each person. It can be painful for some, while others may only feel a bit uncomfortable. Every individual reacts differently. Thousands of people have successfully used this abortion method for over 20 years. Your Oyrafem healthcare team is here to help you feel prepared and supported throughout the experience.

How Soon After an Abortion Can I Get Pregnant?
It’s possible to become pregnant very soon after an abortion. If you wish to prevent another pregnancy, we recommend starting a reliable method of birth control the same day you take the abortion pill. If you have any questions or need assistance with birth control options, we’re here to help.

How Is the Abortion Pill Different from the Morning-After Pill?
Emergency contraception (like the morning-after pill, Plan B, or some IUDs) is a form of birth control, not an abortion. The morning-after pill is used to prevent pregnancy, but pregnancy doesn’t occur immediately after sex—it can take up to six days for sperm and egg to meet. Emergency contraception works in several ways to prevent pregnancy, but it will not terminate an existing pregnancy, regardless of the dosage.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The abortion pill is actually a combination of two medications—mifepristone and misoprostol—that are taken in sequence. In the U.S., these are typically used within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The first pill, mifepristone, blocks a hormone needed for the pregnancy to continue. While some people may experience light vaginal bleeding after taking mifepristone, it is not common.

The second pill, misoprostol, causes cramping and vaginal bleeding to help expel the pregnancy from the body, similar to a miscarriage. Misoprostol is usually taken within 72 hours of mifepristone.
